Merchant-Ivory takes Bollywood to America
Can the fans of Satyajit Ray and the Bollywood blockbuster ever find common ground?

Can the fans of Satyajit Ray and the Bollywood blockbuster ever find common ground? Filmmaker Ismail Merchant thinks so -- Merchant and his producing partner, James Ivory, have put together a festival featuring works from both genres. "Bollywood Comes to the Hudson," a four-day film festival celebrating a half-century of Indian film, will be presented by the Merchant and Ivory Foundation in association with Time & Space Limited in Hudson, NY, May 22-25, over the Memorial Day weekend.
Hudson is around a three-hour drive north of Manhattan. "I didn't want to use the word 'Bollywood' in the name," Merchant laughed, when contacted by India-West. "But everybody is using the term, and it's getting quite popular. It's more like a festival of films from India." Satyajit Ray's classic black and white "Apu Trilogy" -- Pather Panchali, Aparajito and The World of Apu -- will be screened, along with Ismail Merchant's early documentary, Helen: Queen of the Nautch Girls, and three contemporary Bollywood films: Saathiya, Kuch Kuch Hota Hai and Mohabbatein. Merchant and Ivory will host a wine and cheese reception for the public on the evening of May 24 at Time and Space Limited, followed by a screening of KKHH. Merchant made special mention of New York-based distributor Yash Raj Films, and said he was grateful for their support in providing their films to the festival. The Merchant and Ivory Foundation, established in 1991, champions Indian films in theaters and festivals in America (including an entire program of short films presented yearly at the Telluride festival), and has restored no fewer than nine films of Satyajit Ray's. Some of the most arresting visuals on display at the festival won't even be on the big screen: Israeli photographer Jonathan Torgovnik, who has traveled back and forth to India numerous times to chronicle the beauty of the Indian film industry behind the scenes, will exhibit his work at a reception May 25 at the Red Mills in nearby Claverack. Torgovnik's lushly coloured and often whimsical photographs are the subject of a new art book from the Phaidon Press titled "Bollywood Dreams," due to hit stores later this month. His work is also on display this weekend in Los Angeles and Pasadena (see calendar listing). Ismail Merchant will speak on the history of Indian cinema and his relationship to Ray, considered "among the world's greatest directors, living or dead," says Ivory. Merchant will also discuss Bollywood musicals and the industry's recent success among American and British film audiences. Admission prices will go to support the Merchant and Ivory Foundation, which also helps support filmmakers, screenwriters, photographers, and musicians, as well as Time & Space Limited's arts programs for the public.
